Your BlackBerry must be running BlackBerry OS version 4.0 or later. If you need to upgrade your
operating system, please follow these directions: http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=1871
To view your OS version from your BlackBerry, go to Options -> About. If you are running BlackBerry OS version 4.0 or later, continue...
From your BlackBerry Browser
1) Goto http://boopsie.com
2) When accessed from the phone's browser, the above URL will detect your operating
system and offer you the correct download.
3) When prompted, download and install the application for the BlackBerry device that
you are using. There are four versions of Boopsie:
BoopsieV40 - for BlackBerry OS V 4.0
BoopsieV402 - for BlackBerry OS V 4.0.2, but less than V 4.2
BoopsieV42 - for BlackBerry OS V 4.2, but less than V 4.2.1
BoopsieV421 - for BlackBerry OS V 4.2.1 or greater
First Time Use
NOTE: Your BlackBerry may prompt you regarding network or GPS access by Boopsie. The two
questions you may be asked are below. Boopsie will not run if you disable network access. You should choose Don't ask this again and then Yes for
both questions so that you do not continue to be bothered by the question. If you accidentally
choose No, you may reset the system option by looking here. The questions will look similar
to the following:

You may optionally disable access by Boopsie to the GPS, but it works so well with Boopsie, we
don't think you'll be happy disabling it.
1) Navigate to the Boopsie icon and launch the application

2) The first time you run Boopsie, you will be prompted with the Signup agreement. Select 'OK' to continue.
The signup agreement just states that you are responsible for your data services bill. Boopsie uses your data plan
to access our search engine and to launch the BlackBerry Browser.

3) You will then see a 'Sending' progress message.

4) If an error occurs (possibly network coverage or other error), you will see an error message after the 'Sending' progress dialog.
You should select 'Cancel' from the menu and try to run Boopsie again later.
5) If registration is successful, you will see a small introduction on how to use Boopsie. Continue to press Menu -> Next to navigate thru the brief tutorial.

6) The main menu should then appear

General Use
1) After the main menu appears, you may start to use Boopsie
2) The main menu is multi-prefix searchable - just like each channel. You must choose a channel first, then issue a search.
3) For example, to search Wikipedia, type 'w' to the right of the . You'll see the menu narrow down to those
channels with 'w' as a first letter.

4) Arrow down or click on Wikipedia

5) You may now start entering your search term(s). For example, to find 'George C Scott', you might type 'ge c sc'. After each character
you enter, you will see the list narrow down your choices.

6) Select 'George C Scott' and you may then be prompted to allow Boopsie to launch the browser.

7) Select 'Yes' if prompted, and the BlackBerry browser will launch with the appropriate Wikipedia page

Since Boopsie launches the BlackBerry Browser, you need to navigate back to Boopsie for additional searches.
If you want to go directly back from the Browser, select the 'ESC' button and you will be transferred back
to the Boopsie application. On newer Blackberry devices, you may also navigate back to Boopsie by choosing
the menu key from the browser and selecting "Find with Boopsie"
Menu
The application menu may be displayed by using the thumb-wheel or Menu button.

Home : Selecting this option will take you to your 'Home' menu. The default 'Home' menu is the All Channels list. You may change your 'Home'
channel by arrowing down to another channel, for example, CitySearch Chicago and selecting Menu -> Set as home
All Channels : Selecting this will display a list of All Channels that Boopsie searches. The list displays
50 channels at a time, so you may either scroll down to the bottom of the list and select more..., or you
may start typing the channel you desire and Boopsie will search the names of the channels.
Refresh : Refresh the current page.
Settings : Brings up the Settings dialog as described in the next section.
Close : Exit the application.
Context Menu
The channels context menu displays when you have highlighted a channel in the list.

Add to favorites : This menu item will display when you access the menu while on
a highlighted channel. You may add the highlighted channel to your Favorites channel by selecting
Add to favorites.
Set as home : Selecting this will make the highlighted channel your Home page.
You will also be transfered to that channel. You may change your home page at any time
by selecting another channel from the All Channels list and choosing Set as home
Settings
The Settings dialog may be displayed by choosing Menu -> Settings.

OS Version : This line displays the current BlackBerry operating system version.
Version : This line displays the Boospie version you are using.
Data access : This line displays the data access method in use. This is used to
help trouble shoot problems with Boopsie technical support.
Use GPS (if avail.) : If your BlackBerry has built in GPS or is using an external
Bluetooth GPS device, Boopsie is capable of accessing the GPS to find things near your current location.
Location aware channels on Boopsie display a magnifying glass with a cross hair in the middle. If the
background of the icon is red, your GPS is either inaccessible or not reporting valid data.
Some location aware channels are: CitySearch, Starbucks Store Locator, RealEstate, etc.
Never allow : meaning never allow Boopsie to access the GPS position (this is the default).
Always allow : Boopsie will constantly monitor the GPS with this setting. The trade-off with using
this setting is that it will 'eat' your battery much faster. The upside to using this setting
is that the GPS will always be immediately available to the location aware channel when you access
it. Otherwise, it might take a little while for the GPS to 'lock' on a position.
Allow per channel : Boopsie will only access the GPS when an active location aware channel
is chosen. This is what we usually use on our device.
Font Multiplier : This controls the font size for Boopsie - it is a percentage. 100 means 100% size, which
is the default size for the current system font. 80 would make the font smaller, 120 will make it bigger.
Use BlackBerry Maps : If checked and you have a Version 4.2 device or greater, when
you choose Menu -> View on map or Menu -> Directions to here, Boopsie will
automatically launch the BlackBerry Maps application with the address/position of the item
you have highlighted in the list. Location aware channels allow you to view maps, get directions, set your
search center, etc.
Integration with Blackberry Maps (Version 4.2 or greater only)
If you have a more recent Blackberry (8830, etc.) running operating system 4.2 or greater, you may also use Boopsie
to integrate with the Blackberry Maps application. (Prior to OS Version 4.2, there was no API to integrate
with BlackBerry Maps.) Make sure you download BoopsieV42 or greater from the download
link (http://boopsie.com) from your Blackberry Browser.
Boopsie will integrate with Blackberry Maps for channels that have location information (CitySearch, Starbucks Store Locator, RealEstate, etc.). When you access
the context sensitive menu by pressing the Menu key, you will be presented with mapping options.

For example, we will find RL (Ralph Lauren's restaurant in Chicago) and display it on a map. First, choose
the City Search Chicago channel, then type 'RL'.

Next, arrow down to 'RL'.

Next, press the Menu key to bring up the context sensitive menu and select View on map.

Boopsie will automatically launch the Blackberry Maps application with the location of 'RL' marked on the map.

Return to Boopsie by pressing the Back key or Menu -> Find with Boopsie (only available on devices running BlackBerry version 4.2.1 or greater).

To find directions
from 'RL to the 'Drake Hotel', while 'RL' is still highlighted in Boopsie, choose Menu -> Search from here. This will set your
'search center'. Your list will automatically refresh and show you the nearest places to
your 'search center'. Subsequent searches will also display the distance from your 'search center'
to the list items. Next, erase
the text filter field and type 'drak ho' for the 'Drake Hotel' and arrow down to highlight it.

Choose Menu -> Directions to here.

Boopsie will again launch Blackberry Maps and show you the route.

You may also choose turn by turn instructions from the Blackberry Maps menu.
Location Aware Channel Menu
As described above, the following choices are available on location aware channels. If you have a BlackBerry
with an enabled GPS, we recommend enabling Boopsie to use the GPS by going to the Boopsie
Settings dialog and choosing 'Allow per channel'. Please read below how your 'search center' is set
and cleared and when cleared your GPS acts as your 'search center'.
Download listing : selecting this will download the name, address, phone number, etc. of the
currently highlighted listing.
View on map : display the highlighted location on a map.
Search from here : set your 'search center' to the highlighted location. Subsequent searches
will display the distance from your 'search center' to each list item.
Directions to here : display driving directions from your 'search center' to the
highlighted location. NOTE: if you have not set a 'search center', but you have GPS and it is enabled
from the Boopsie Settings dialog, then 'Directions to here' will display directions from
your current location to the highlighted item.
Clear search center : this will erase your 'search center' and discontinue sorting
items by distance (unless you have GPS activated). Clearing the search center while you have
GPS active will force Boopsie to sort the list by distance from your current location. If you have
GPS enabled, clear your search center and go to the Starbucks Store Locator channel - it will
show you the nearest Starbucks. Also, if you are on a CitySearch channel, you can type in a filter
like 'rest ital' for 'restaurants, italian' and all Italian Restaurants will be sorted by
distance from your current location. The display is typically updated every one tenth (0.1) mile.
Click to call : this will dial the highlighted item.
Tips
The Blackberry browser is configured by default to not support HTML tables or Style Sheets. Some of the mobile
pages that Boopsie displays (like the Caltrain schedule) look better if you turn on supoprt for HTML Tables and Styel Sheets.
To turn these on, launch the Browser and choose Options from the Menu, then choose Browser Configuration. Then, check the boxes next to
Support HTML Tables and Support Style Sheets
You may select an entry from the Boopsie lists by pressing the Enter key instead of clicking the track wheel.
Network Configuration/Troubleshooting
A direct TCP stack has been included with BlackBerry OS v4.0, which allows a direct TCP connection to be opened from the
BlackBerry handheld without using the Mobile Data Service. Boopsie may use this mechanism to connect to the Boopsie Server.
If you are connecting via BES/MDS, you might not need to configure your TCP settings. If you are not
using a BES/MDS connection, or you cannot get Boopsie working with it, you can configure your phone's
TCP settings as follows:
This is the most common problem on BlackBerry devices...
The error message you might get is: "java.io.IOException: could not open tunnell - failed"
You must have a valid APN set in your TCP settings.
1) Launch the Options program (located in the Settings folder on the 8700)
2) Find the TCP settings (under Advanced Settings on some models)
3) Fill in the APN with your carrier's appropriate APN settings. You may find some valid
APN settings provided by QuickIM.com here.
Example APN settings, for Cingular:
APN: WAP.CINGULAR
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
for T-Mobile:
APN: wap.voicestream.com
Username: [blank]
Password: [blank]
November 7, 2007: Verizon ships the 8830 with a built-in APN setting, so you do not have to set it with the Advanced Options, TCP dialog.
ATT appears to ship newer models (8310) with a pre-filled in APN of WAP.CINGULAR (as above). So, you should not have to change this.
T-Mobile - does not appear to set a default APN, so you may have to add it as wap.voicestream.com as stated above.
"Bad DNS Address"
- If you get the "Bad DNS Address" error message, it's due to a bug of BlackBerry OS. You need
to remove the battery and put it back on. After the reoot, you should be able to use Boopsie
again.
"DNSException"
- If you get the red "DNSException" error message, it is typically one of two things:
1) You are using the 'Local APN' from the Boopsie Settings -> Data Access entry and your TCP APN setting under Advanced Options is set
incorrectly. You should make sure you have the proper APN set for your carrier if you are using 'Local APN'. See the above reference
to Network Configuration/Trouble Shooting.
2) You are using the 'Local APN' from the Boopsie Settings -> Data Access entry and you are in an area that has weak or no
data network coverage. It may also be that your carrier is experiencing high traffic on the data network and cannot process
the network request at this time. Boopsie will attempt the connection 3 times before showing you this error.
The application...has attempted...
- If you get the following error message: "The application ... has attempted to open a
connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by
your IT policy.", you need to reinstall the OS - the BlackBerry OS remembers this error even if you
uninstall and reinstall the Boopsie application. You should back up your data first.
Here are the general steps:
- Establish a cable connection to your BlackBerry handheld
- Using the Desktop Manager's Application Loader wizard, reinstall all your applications
- At the final screen of the wizard, entitled "Completing the Application Loader Wizard", press the "Advanced..." button located near the lower right
- Check "Erase all currently installed applications" and select Next to continue
- Leave the automatic data backup option as default, select Next to continue
- Press Finish to initiate the OS reinstall
Correcting - Don't ask this again
- You'll get "Permission denied" or the first screen will stick on "Sending..." if you
have accidentally answered "Deny this connection" along with "Don't ask this again" checked on
a HTTP network permissions popup. To get around "Permission denied" on subsequent uses, you
need to re-enable the network permissions popup. From the BlackBerry's Home screen, select
Options.
Depending on your Blackberry OS version number you will need to do one or a combination of both of the following:
For 'newer' Blackberry devices:
- Choose Security Options
- Choose Advanced Options
- Choose Applications
- Scroll down and highlight Boopsie
- Menu -> Edit Permissions
- On Connections, press Menu -> Expand
- Scroll down to Carrier Internet and tell me what that says. It should say Allow. Yours probably says "Deny". Change it to Allow. Then, choose Menu -> Save
- Run Boopsie - if you continue to get the same error, also do the following:
For 'older' Blackberry devices: or if the above did not work...
- Select the Firewall option from the Options list (this may also be under 'Advanced Options') provided list. Press the thumbwheel and select
Reset Settings.
Enabling GPS on the Verizon 8830
You may use the GPS functionality of the 8830 even tho Verizon disabled the on-board GPS chipset.
First, you must pair with an external GPS Bluetooth device. Then, you must go to the Options -> Advanced Settings -> GPS
dialog and change the GPS Data Source to the name of the GPS Bluetooth device with which you've paired.
You must then enable Boopsie's use of the GPS for location aware channels by going to the Boopsie
Settings dialog and set the Use GPS (if avail): value to either Always allow or Allow per channel.
When you go to a location aware channel on Boopsie, you should wait a second and then the nearest places
to you will automatically populate.
Pairing with an external Bluetooth GPS device
1) Start the Manage Connections application (the icon looks like an antenna on a tripod).
2) Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and exit the Manage Connections application.
3) Start the SetUp Bluetooth application
4) Make sure your Bluetooth GPS device is on and then pair the device. You will probably have
to enter a password for the device. When you are done, you will see the name of the Bluetooth GPS
device listed in the "Paired Devices:" list.
Changing the GPS Data Source
1) Start the Options application (the icon looks like a wrench).
2) Choose Advanced Options
3) Choose GPS
4) Change the GPS Data Source to the name you saw listed in the "Paired Devices:" list from above.
