Did you know that you can now link to your electronic resources from within your ILS catalog? The Library of Congress has a set of guidelines created in regards to a MARC 21 file (your catalog extract). Field 856 is saved for resources that have an electronic copy available. For instance, if you have both a physical and electronic copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you can add a link to the electronic copy in your 856 field.
For Boopsie to provision that feature within your mobile app, it just takes a few simple steps. Once we have a completed MARC extract with an 856 field from you, we can provide an enhanced catalog. An enhanced catalog adds a link to your item detail page of the app (the page that allows you to check out a book) to the same item in the electronic resources’ database. So if you were searching for the Chamber of Secrets, your catalog search results would not only display the physical copies, but also the OverDrive/OneClickdigital/3M Cloud Library digital copies as well. Lafayette Public Library System and The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County currently offer enhanced catalogs. Boopsie is currently in the process of implementing the enhanced catalog for all libraries. After the implementation is complete, users can choose to search using either the traditional method directly via OverDrive or the new enhanced method within the ILS.
This enhanced catalog will provide a seamless search experience for library mobile user as they will be able to access both physical and digital (eBooks and eAudioBooks) collections when performing a catalog search.
So what does an Enhanced Catalog search look like?
Searching for eContent, the non-enhanced way:
With the Lafayette Public Library System, users would select OverDrive from the Main Menu. Once the OverDrive integration opens, users need to choose to search either eBooks or eAudioBooks. Since we’re looking for eBooks, we’ll select the Download eBooks option. Now we have to search the eBook collection to find what we’re looking for. Once the desired eBook pops up, users select the title to open the item’s detail page for the eBook.
Searching for eBooks with an Enhanced Catalog:
There are several steps involved with the traditional search, which can deter some users. With an enhanced catalog, users can perform a simple catalog search to find eBooks. Just select Catalog Search from the Main Menu, and users can begin typing the title of the eBook they’re looking for. As the results narrow down, they will find OverDrive eBooks noted with “[OverDrive]” at the end of their titles.
With the enhanced catalog, the searching method is the same for eAudioBooks as well. The search results will just display “[OneClickDigital]” or the applicable eAudioBook provider name.
